Environmental Chief wants old Rainmaker Hotel cleaned

Friday, October 10, 2008

The Chief of the Environmental Health Division of Public Health has recommended an immediate clean up of the old Rainmaker Hotel grounds and dilapidates buildings.

Sigafili Leiato has written to the Acting President of the Development Bank of American Samoa Jason Betham stating that as owners of the hotel it has a responsibility to clean up this health hazard. A survey by the Land Grant Entomologist had found the species of mosquito that spread dengue at the site. Leiato says the mosquitoes were harbored in the suspected breeding site, the long forsaken swimming pool, but were found in bottles, cans, trash and broken bricks that had collected water. And in the tall unkempt grass. The environmental health chief said, “it’s an ugly mess, the whole place must be cleaned up.

He added that with dengue spreading rapidly in the territory, the possibility that the hotel may be a contributing factor couldn’t be discounted. He says the acting DBAS president, recognizes that they have a responsibility, as owners to clean up the hotel DBAS is the majority shareholder of the American Samoa Development Corporation which is the legally owner of the rainmaker. The bank is moving to secure the services of a contractor to clean up the site. The hotel has not been occupied since 2004. It got the Health Department's attention after former lawmaker Muavaefaatasi Ae Ae Jr. complained about a mosquito attack while outside Sadie’s by the Sea.
