Former MP Toi Aukuso dies

Monday, April 20, 2009

A former government minister in Samoa serving a life sentence for plotting to kill another cabinet minister has died.

Toi Aukuso Cain died of liver cancer Friday. He had represented Faleata West constituency for twenty years before he was jointly charged with another former MP, Le’afa Vitale, in relation to the killing of the minister of works, Luagalau Leva’ula Kamu, in 1999.

The present serving member of Parliament for Faleata West Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi had recently called in Parliament for To’i to be granted Sunday parole however his call was met with objections from the MP now holding the seat held by the late minister. Toi’s wife said that her husband had been in a comatose state for several days prior to his passing.

The two remaining prisoners of the killing, Le’afa Vitale and his son Eletise Vitale continue to serve their life sentence in Samoa’s main prison.
