Special Fono Session begins
Monday,
June 22, 2009
The Chairman of the House Budget and Appropriations Committee Rep. Vaiausia Yandall wants to review how government collections have fared in the first three quarters of Fiscal year 2009 to ascertain if money bills being submitted for review during the Special Fono session can be funded.
Two money bills introduced on this first day of the special session would appropriate $200,000 to fund the Office of the Independent Prosecutor and $330,000 to fund the American Samoa Economic Stimulus Office. The two bills are to be funded with unbudgeted, unobligated and unexpended monies from fiscal year 2009.
Rep Vaiausia has scheduled a hearing on the two bills for Thursday and wants the Treasurer and Budget director to testify. In addition he says the House must receive from the Treasurer reports on ASG collections for the first , second and third quarters of the current fiscal year. The Fofo representative is also asking that the Treasurer submit an accounting of all revenues raked in by ASG for Fiscal Year 2008.
Rep Vaiausia was upset that up to now Treasurer Magalei has still not furnished a copy of the Fiscal Year 2007 single audit report for ASG, which he had requested three weeks before the first regular session adjourned. He said he had written to Magalei but has not received a response or a report from the Treasurer. Vaiausia said he will deal with the Treasurer when he appears on Thursday.
