June 22, 2009
Police Officer Jerry Sauni will be arraigned in High Court tomorrow after he waived his rights to a probable cause hearing in District Court today.
Of the six people charged over the disappearance of evidence from the Department of Public Safety evidence room, Sauni is the only one still in custody. His bail has been reduced from $100, 000 to $65,000. He faces 43 counts.
Court filings say that Sauni admitted to police that he removed five firearms from the evidence room which he used for himself, and also gave to Officers Patrick Nomura, Michael Fuiava Jr., Officer Misi Leo and a taxi sriver to whom he’s related, Onosai Aulava.
He also told investigating officers that he removed money that was kept in the Drug Room. He said the cash was from police raids in the Punaloa David Atofau case, that of Victor Chanel, Elioka Siaumau and other cases that he does not recall.
Sauni claimed that he did not know what had happened to 24 grams of methamphetamine that went missing form Atofau’s case. He stated that he did not take or remove any drugs from the Evidence Room.
Sauni is represented by attorney Mark Ude while Assistant Attorney Lisa Johns is prosecuting.
