Aoloau landowners bar access to Olotele tower
Tuesday,
June 23, 2009
Chiefs of Aoloau village have barred access to communications equipment on Mount Olotele because they believe the village did not grant approval to some of the tenants using their lands.
The facility at Olotele houses air to ground radio antennas for the Federal Aviation Administration, and antennas for the American Samoa Telecommunciations Authority, Blue Sky Communications, and radio stations KHJ, V103, Showers of Blessings and KULA public radio.
Two weeks ago village leaders removed locks from the gate to the facility at Olotele and padlocked the gate with a single lock for which the village leaders have the key. According to High Chief Moananu Va, the village only gave approval for the use of its lands to the Federal Aviation Administration and American Samoa Telecommunications Authority, but not the rest of the companies now using Olotele. He said the village needs to control access because there’s traffic going up to Olotele at odd hours of the night and it may not be all work related.
Moananu said that the FAA, ASTCA and Blue Sky will be given keys to the village lock to Olotele but the radio stations will have to wait until the village decides their cases.
President of South Seas Broadcasting Larry Fuss said the company has a valid lease for our facility atop Mt. Olotele. It was signed by Paramount Chief A.U. Fuimaono and Governor Togiola and was properly recorded with the ASG. He said, "If we have to access the site to work on our equipment, we will not be restricted by anyone who thinks they have the right to circumvent a legally recorded lease."
