DOE Central Office waiting for paychecks

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

More than 20 employees of the Department of Education Central Office are waiting for their paychecks.

They learned yesterday that Treasury did not process their paychecks on orders from Treasurer Magalei Logovii because they have not complied with the time clock policy.  The only four DOE employees from the Central Office who did get paid were the Director, her secretary and two others. What’s puzzling the workers who didn’t get paid is that the rest of DOE’s about 2000 employees have not started punching in with time clocks, yet they still received their paychecks.

DOE Director Dr. Claire Poumele says she’s puzzled as to why the 26 employees of the business and personnel office have been singled out by the Treasurer.  She said that the Treasurer had approved a request from DOE for more time to comply with the time clock sign ins.  She said if DOE was to purchase time clocks for all schools, cafeterias and divisions, it would cost the department about $50,000. She said they are looking at cheaper and more effective technology that would satisfy the treasurer’s requirements and also accommodate reporting requirements of the US Department of Education.

Dr. Poumele said she feels bad for the employees who were not paid which included DOE deputy directors.  Those with direct deposits were expecting to have their salaries in their accounts for Father’s Day, but this didn’t happen.  She said Treasury may issues paychecks for the DOE staff today or Friday.
