Reminders for business survey worked

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Reminders to businesses that did not complete the questionnaire for the territory’s first business survey got the attention that the Department of Commerce intended.

According to Chief Statistician Meleisea Vaitoelau Filiga, 90% of the businesses surveyed have now submitted their completed survey forms.  The first quarterly business survey will give an indication of how local companies were affected by the increases in the minimum wages, how much their wage bill went up, and whether any jobs were eliminated as a result.

The survey will also assess the total economic value of the local economy in gross sales and revenue, the value of goods produced locally and information of total employment, wages and compensation.

The Statistics Division plans to issue a preliminary report of the business survey in the first week of July with a final report scheduled to come out before August. Meleisea says more businesses will be included in the second quarterly survey for which forms will be distributed during the second week of July.
