TEO proposes five projects for stimulus funding

The Territorial Energy Office has received $1.8 million in administrative costs for projects which have been proposed for funding using stimulus monies.
Acting Director of TEO Mauigoa Reupena Tagaloa says the awarding of the administrative costs is a clear sign that the five projects that American Samoa applied for under the Total State Energy Program, have been approved. The territory is receiving $18.5 million from the US Department of Energy for projects which would lessen the dependence on fossil fuels.
The bulk of the funding is proposed for a solar photovoltaic farm which uses energy from the sun to produce electricity. Other projects would see the installation of solar powered panels on government buildings and a few commercial buildings. Also being proposed is a solar water heater to provide all of the LBJ hospital’s hot water needs.
Also being planned is a diesel organic co generation power recycling project to be administered by the American Samoa Power Authority.
Mauigoa says TEO has submitted the required documentation and plans for the stimulus funding and he expects approval from the US Department of Energy within a few weeks.
