Sen. Tuanaitau calls for briefing on citizenship bill

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

Senator Tuanaitau Tuia wants Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin to brief the Fono about his bill to obtain US citizenship for American Samoans.

The congressman has said that he intends to introduce in Congress next month a bill that would make it possible for US nationals from American Samoa to apply for US citizenship, without having to reside in the United States.

Tuanaitau said that he is not against the congressman’s efforts but feels Faleomavaega should provide a full briefing to the Fono about his bill. He said lawmakers should understand the congressman’s reasons for introducing the bill and the benefits to be gained from the legislation.

Senate President Gaoteote Palaie said he would make contact with the congressman’s office and inform the Senate.
