Illinois soldier attached to local reserve killed

Friday, June 26, 2009

A soldier from Illinois who had a cross level attachment to the 100th Battalion 442nd Infantry Regiment out of Pago Pago was killed yesterday during convey operations in southern Iraq. He has been identified as Specialist Casey Hills of Illinois.

Captain John Adams Commander of the local Army Reserve said that Specialist Hills was attached to the local combat reserve units during deployment to Iraq last year. Since news of the death of Specialist Hills was reported by national media which quoted that he was attached to the local reserve unit, the Army Reserve Center has been inundated with phone calls.

A statement from the Department of Defense said that Hills joined the Illinois National Guard in March 2005 and was deployed to Kuwait in November last year in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

A memorial service for Hills is scheduled for tomorrow at Camp Virginia Kuwait.

Two local soldiers were injured in the same accident that killed Specialist Hills.  They are Sgt. Talifaie Tuufuli and Specialist Billy Gibson. Their injuries were not serious and both have been released. Their families were notified yesterday about their injuries.
