Governor re-submits directors for confirmation

Monday, June 29, 2009

Governor Togiola Tulafono is resubmitting to the Fono for confirmation the names of five cabinet members who were rejected during the first regular session.

The governor had listed confirmation of executive positions on the agenda of the special session. He said in his June 25th letter to the Fono leaders that since the nominations are being made neither during an adjournment of the Legislature, nor less than five days before the end of a legislative session they are compliant with the American Samoa Code annotates.  He added, "I trust that they will be head during the current session."

House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale announced on the House floor this morning that he and the Senate President have decided to allow the introductions of the director confirmations however the Fono will not vote on the appointments until the next regular session.

Fono attorneys have opined that directors who have been rejected for can only be resubmitted during a regular session, not a special session of the Fono.

The five directors nominated by the Governor are Paolo Sivia Sivia as Director of the Office of Public Information. Mauigoa Repuena Tagaloa as Director of the Territorial Energy Office, Faafiti Pita Tauanuu as Director of the Territorial Administration on Aging Office, Aomalo Manupo Turituri as Director of Agriculture and Tuiasina Dr. Salamo Laumoli as Director of Health.
