LBJ explains delay in testing for H1N1 flu

Monday, June 29, 2009

There was a delay in sending specimens of highly suspected cases of swine flu to Hawaii for testing because Hawaiian Air did not recognize a courier company used by the Hawaii State Lab which conducted the tests.

CEO of the LBJ Hospital Patricia Tindall said that the issue has since been resolved and they do not anticipate any further delays in the shipping of samples.

LBJ has a supply of tamiflu anti virals and will be following Centers for Disease Control and World Health Organization protocols for diagnosis and treatment.  Tindall said LBJ will treaty with tamiflu any patients that meet the criteria for treatment.

The CEO said LBJ fully supports the Department of Health’s efforts to monitor and contain the spread of swine flu, and stands ready to assist in the testing and of course the treatment of individuals who contract any illness.

She stressed that the most  important message  to get across to the public is that they must follow the DOH’s advise when it comes to H1N1 flu, and that is to keep yourself and your family healthy. Wash hands regularly and if you are sick, isolate yourself to avoid spread to your family.  Take plenty of fluids, and bed rest, and get yourself tested if your symptoms persist.
