June 30, 2009
Resolutions calling for the confirmation of directors who had been rejected in the first regular session were introduced in the Senate this morning.
Senate President Gaoteote Palaie said that no action will be taken on the appointments during the special session. He said the Senate will review the confirmations during the regular session which opens in the second week of July.
Senator Velega Savali said that directors who are rejected by the Fono cannot continue in those positions. He said the rejected directors are still serving. Senator Malepeai Setu clarified however that the law states that the limit on acting directors to serve without confirmation is 90 days.
The resolutions for the director confirmations were also on the agenda of the House this morning however the House could not hold a session because it did not have a quorum. Only 10 representatives were present, one short of a quorum. This is the second time during the special session that the House did not have a quorum.
