Businessman unhappy with Immigration Office

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

The owner of a construction company is utterly disappointed with the enforcement of immigration laws.

Filoialii Ioane Laumatia, General manager of Atlas construction said his company terminated sponsorship of a Filipino worker in April. He was instructed by the Immigration Office to purchase a return ticket for the employee to the Philippines which he did.  He was reassured that the employee would be deported and not be allowed to re-enter the territory.

The employee departed on May 1st. However according to Filoialii, the employee is back in American Samoa and is now employed by another construction company.

He questions how a person who was deported could gain re-entry to the territory so soon after he was sent home.  It’s his understanding that the person must be kept out for a period of time.

The company owner has written to the Chief Immigration Officer Ufuti Faafetai Ieremia for an investigation into this case. Copies of his letter were sent to the Attorney General, the chairman of the Immigration Board, the FBI Office and lawmakers from Fofo District, Rep Vaiausia Eliko Yandall and Senator Avegalio Aigamaua.
