The US Treasury has approved American Samoa’s distribution plan for the tax rebates and credits under the economic stimulus package.
Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson Jr. has notified Governor Togiola that American Samoa is to receive $20.4 million. Paulson said a payment in this amount would be made by the US Treasury to American Samoa to fund the prompt distribution of stimulus payments to residents of American Samoa pursuant to the plan that was submitted. ASG is expected to begin issuing checks in two weeks. Individual filers would receive $300 or a maximum of $600 and couples filing jointly would be entitled to $1200. Each child under 17 would also collect $300. The Internal Revenue Service began issuing deposits to US taxpayers under the economic stimulus program today. The local Tax Office plans to issue checks through the Disbursing Office just like it has for the ACTC and local tax refunds.
