The High Court has fined drug defendant Gary Carmody $5,000 for possession of marijuana.
As with other visitors found with drugs at the airport, the High Court opted for the fine instead of a jail term. Carmody traveled from Oregon with his wife for a visit and was sniffed out by one of the customs dog while he was waiting at the immigration counter. A search by customs agents found two marijuana joints in his clothing. Before he was sentenced, Carmody said he’s sorry for disrespecting the laws of the territory. He assured that his next visit will be under good circumstances. The government and defense recommended that the defendant be fined. Deputy Attorney General Fredrick O’Brien said that Carmody is not a smuggler; the joints found on him were for personal use. Associate Justice Lyle Richmond told the defendant that in this territory no matter how small the amount of marijuana one possesses it’s a serious offense. Assistant Public Defender Ruth Risch said the $5,000 bond, which Carmody posted, as bail would settle his fine. Carmody and his wife return to Oregon tonight.
