Governor submits bill to increase teacher salaries

Thursday, May 1, 2008

The governor’s office sent to the Fono late this afternoon a bill proposing a new salary reclassification plan for teachers.

While the Fono leaders had announced yesterday that they were planning to end the special session tomorrow, it remains to be seen whether this will happen. The Senate President said even if bills come in today, it will take several days to translate and prepare them for introduction. And he pointed out that the Senate needs enough time to review major legislation such as the teacher salary plan and an appropriation for the LBJ hospital. House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale says the House will continue meeting until it has complete review of bills submitted by the administration. The special session is for ten days and the governor does have the option of extending it.
