Principals can’t take salaries when they change jobs

Provisions included in the administration teacher salary reclassification plan are aimed at preventing the problem of school principals taking their principal salaries with them when they take up other positions in the Department of Education or other agencies.
According to the proposal the new salary scale is for teaching personnel only. If principals and teachers leave to take up other jobs in DOE or ASG, they cannot continue to earn the salaries they were paid as teachers or principals. They salaries will be reclassified according to the appropriate payscle with the Department of Human Resources. In other words, once they lave their teaching or principal position they are no longer under the new salary reclassification plan but the general ASG pay scale will apply. The bill would also declare any principal position vacant once the occupant leaves.
The intent of this provision is to prohibit the movement of principals to administrative positions outside of the schools they serve, without relinquishment of the principal title for other teaching personnel to ascend to. The Senate has scheduled a hearing on the teacher salary plan on Monday and is calling in Director of Education Dr. Claire Poumele, the Budget Director, and Treasurer. The salary plan ties pay to degrees, teacher certification and proficiency in hard to fill teaching jobs. The salary increases are to be paid with un-obligated funds from DOE’s fiscal year 2008 budget. Governor Togiola said that thorough discussions with the Department of Education, the administration has developed the reclassification plan that rewards the attainment of credentials and promotes overall effectiveness in the classrooms. He said the newly revised pay scale for teachers makes the positions more competitive, which would make recruitment and detainment of teachers easier.
