Treasurer recommends $10,000 fine for undeclared goods

Monday, May 5, 2008

The Treasurer is recommending stiff penalties for the importation of undeclared goods.

Gaea Perefoti Failautusi says he has discussed with the governor legislation to establish penalties for anyone found importing goods, which are not, included in their shipment manifests. Gaea said that customs officers have intercepted several such shipments since the start of container inspections on the dock. He said the law does not presently provide a penalty. He’s proposing a $10,000 fine to deter the practice. Gaea said for now they can only require the importer to pay the 5% excise tax on the undeclared goods but they cannot fine the importer. Another suggestion he’s made is that undeclared goods be charged 15% excise tax instead of 5%.
