Leapai wants ASG to get bonus miles

Individuals who travel off island on government funded trips would no longer receive frequent flyer mileage from such trips if a bill introduced today by Representative Leapai Sipa Anoai is approved.
The bill would credit to ASG any benefits associated with government-funded travel, such as bonus mileage accruals. This was the only bill, other than a resolution to adjourn the Fono until August 4, which was introduced in the House this morning. According to Leapai’s bill, ASG spends about $6 million a year on employee travel. Given this high volume of government paid trips, he believes any benefit from such travel should be credit to ASG and not the individual traveler. He said bonus mileage could generate substantial savings and could be earmarked for the off island medical referral program. The Fagatogo lawmaker is calling for audit procedures to ensure compliance by ASG employees, agencies and vendors. The bill would also provide employee and vendor sanctions for failure to adhere to travel policies. Leapai’s bill has been assigned to the Budget and Appropriations Committee.
