Happy Manu’a Cession Day
Wednesday,
July 16, 2008
The territory today marks 104 years since the signing of the Deed of Cession, which put the eastern, most groups of islands in the Samoas under the protection of the United States.
At 8 this morning a flag raising ceremony will get under way at Tau village. A statement issued by the Governor 's Office earlier this week said Manu'a Cession Day marks that day on July 14, 1902 when Tuimanu'a Elisara and Manu'a chiefs, being content and satisfied with justice, fairness and wisdom of the government of the United States of America were desirous of placing the islands of Manu'a under the full and complete sovereignty of the United states. Togiola said as we celebrate this historic occasion, we call to mind the intent of the Manua Deed of Cession: that there shall be no discrimination in the suffragists and political privileges between the resident of the Manu’a island and citizens of the United States, and also that the rights of the chiefs in each village and of all people concerning their property according to their customs shall be recognized. A thanksgiving church service was held last evening in Tau.
While today is a public holiday for ASG., several departments will be working on preparations for the Arts Festival. Deputy Secretary of Samoan Affairs Nanai Afuola is calling in all village mayors to a meeting at 9 this morning at the Office of Samoan Affairs. The pulenuu will tend to clean up and final touches for the fales at the festival village, and attend a rehearsal for the ava ceremony. Nanai said that uniforms will also be distributed.
