Chamber welcomes privatization news

The Chamber of Commerce and Governor Economic Advisory council are pleased to hear the governor’s announcement to privatize the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority.
Chamber President David Robinson, who also co chairs the council said they are compiling a third report which covers privatization of certain government operations. He said ASTCA is the first agency that they are identifying as having the best potential for privatizations. Others are ASPA, Port Administration and certain functions of the Department of Parks and Recreation. The council and chamber are also recommending the privatization of the DOE school lunch program management, which is already taking place with the Sodexho take over. Robinson said the council is slash studying the possibility of making the Office of Procurement independent to insure a level playing field for all bids submitted for government contracts. And foster fair competition. The last area they will look at LBJ Hospital. Robinson explained that they see functions of the hospital that could be turned over to the private sector such as the lab services and the EMS Divisions.
