Arts Fest Committee gets a spiritual boost
Thursday,
July 17, 2008
The Arts Festival Committee got a spiritual boost yesterday from a religious leader, and thanks and admiration from the governor.
This came at the church service organized by the committee for the community to come together to pray for God’s blessings and protection as the territory welcomes the Pacific to its shores. Rev Ned Ripley led the service at the Fagatogo congregational Christian Church. Governor Togiola and First Lady Maryanne Tulafono, Lt, Governor Faoa Ipulasi, a few lawmakers, High Chief Tiumalu Scanlan and several members of the Arts Festival Committee were present. It was a sparsely attended service, choir members filling half the pews. Rep Ripley reminded the committee of the words of the Prophet Isaiah: Do not be afraid I am with you and the Apostle Peter when he said be ready always to give answer to every man that asks you a reason concerning the hope that is with you with meekness and fear. He urged the committee to carry out their duties with respect, kindness, patience and love. The pastor said the Arts Festival was a golden opportunity, one that the territory may never get again to host visitors and exchange our own culture and arts with our Pacific neighbors. He said some of the participating islands are countries where Samoan missionaries had labored and ministered.
Governor Togiola echoed Rev Ripley; saying that the festival was a once in a lifetime opportunity for American Samoa. He said the festival planning started three years ago and all of the preparations and plans will be put to the test in the next two weeks. The thanked the committee members for their service and mentioned in particular the lt. governor who was the first chairman, the present co chairs, Leala Elisara and Fagafaga Daniel Langkilde and the Festival Executive Director Lauti Simona. The governor said hospitality was at the center of the Samoan culture. He said the hosting of our Pacific visitors is a task not just for the Committee but for the whole territory. He urged all of American Samoa to show their true Samoan spirit in welcoming and hosting our visitors .
