Utulei food vendors doing well

Thursday, July 24, 2008

After a slow start for the first two days of the Arts Festival food vendors at Utulei Beach had their first busy day yesterday.

About a dozen vendors are serving hot plates, canned food, snacks and drinks and several are opened nearly 24 hours. The large crowds at Utulei Beach gave what the vendors had been expecting from day one…brisk business.

Bingham Faamausili said that most of their sales came from local residents. Faamausili said he will wait till the festival is finished to redeem his festival food vouchers

There’s some confusion about the food voucher values for festival participants. Some have reported that if they use cash they are charged one price and a different one if they use food vouchers. A female dancer said when she tried to use two $8 vouchers to buy three $5 plates which one stall was selling for cash sales, she was told that she can only get one plate per $8 voucher.  The stall owner explained to KHJ News that she prepared a different plate for the voucher system and another for cash paying customers. She said the committee told us we had to prepare meals that were worth the voucher.  But for cash customers, “I put in less food and charge a lower price.”
