Vaka arrives Safely

Reverend Orekene chanting in the arrival of the Te Au o Tonga, the voyaging canoe from the Cool Islands.  

It was just past 8 last night when skipper Garth Henderson and traditional navigator Tua Pittman and their young crew pulled in to the inter island dock. A large welcoming party greeted their arrival. Governor Togiola and members of the Arts Festival committee, chiefs of the Cook Islands and their contingent to the Arts Festival were at the dock.

Prayers were said and Governor Togiola welcomed the malaga

Traditional navigator Tua Pittman learned ancient sailing techniques under two well-known navigators of the Pacific Mau Pialug of Micronesia and Nainoa Thomas of Hawaii. The journey to American Samoa he said fulfilled a promise he made to Pialug to revive traditional navigation skills.

Pittman had a special message for young people.

Before the voyagers retreated for their first night’s sleep on a bed, in weeks, they were served coconuts and KFC.
